An investigation into a fatal wreck is underway after troopers said a pickup struck a pedestrian who was lying in the road.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the wreck happened around 2:00 p.m. Friday on Docheno Road, about two miles outside Belton.
Troopers said Jack Oates, 67, of Piedmont, was driving a pickup when the vehicle struck a person who was already on the ground. Investigators said the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing.
So far, no charges have been filed.
The Oconee County Coroner's office said a 63-year-old woman from Westminster died Saturday night after she was hit by a vehicle.
Coroner Karl Addis said the collision happened just after 9 p.m. Saturday on West Oak Highway near Pioneer Water Company.
The preliminary investigation suggests the woman was walking back to her home after getting mail from her mailbox when she was hit by a vehicle, Addis said.
The death is considered accidental, and the coroner will release her name Sunday afternoon.
South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol website, one person is dead after a single-car crash in Piedmont.
Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 3:15 a.m. Saturday on Bessie Road near South Piedmont Highway.
