At about 6:00pm, Ketterling was driving a snowmobile on which Petrov was a passenger on Pack Saddle Pass Road when he took a turn at too high of a speed, departed the roadway, and struck a tree. Both men were thrown from the vehicle on impact, but while Petrov suffered a broken leg, Ketterling suffered critical injuries and died.
