A motorist was injured fatally Wednesday when he pulled into the breakdown lane on Route 146 and got out of his vehicle, according to state police. State police said the driver stepped into the first lane of traffic and was struck by a tractor-trailer. The man was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital. He declined to identify the victim, saying that officers were still trying to reach relatives. He said the truck driver was Michael Hammond, 45, of Warwick, an employee of UPS. No charges were contemplated, police said.
