Single-car crash at intersection brings down power lines in Wake County, North Carolina

Police expect Lake Wheeler Road at Lineberry Drive will be closed in both directions until late Tuesday or early Wednesday. A passenger vehicle struck a pole supporting power lines at the intersection, according to police. The crash happened shortly before 9 p.m., bringing power wires down at the intersection. Police were waiting on utility service crews to fix the line as of about 9:45 p.m. The affected stretch of road sits between I-40 and Tryon Road in western Raleigh.

Joyce M. McDaniel killed after two car crash on icy N.C 104 in Surrey County.

Two vehicles collided on N.C. 104 near Mount Airy. Thirty-seven-year-old Joyce M. McDaniel of Meadows Dan, Va., died. She was a passenger in a minivan involved in the crash. Troopers say the weather contributed to the crash.

A passenger died Tuesday afternoon when a woman lost control of her pickup truck on a road covered with snow and ice. The truck went down an embankment and hit a tree. Troopers said 68-year-old Jean Conley of Elkin died. Troopers said it appeared the victim was not wearing a seat belt.

An 83-year-old woman from Durham died Sunday afternoon when police say she was hit head-on while traveling westbound on Interstate 40.

Preliminary information from a police officer at the scene indicates that at around 4:45 p.m., a man traveling eastbound on I-40, fell asleep at the wheel, crossed over all lanes of I-40 East and then over the median into the westbound lanes where he hit a driver head-on.

His vehicle overturned in the middle of the highway, and the vehicle he hit was pushed off the roadway and into a tree.

Construction worker killed when he falls from scaffolding in Wake Co.

A worker was killed when he fell from a scaffold at an apartment complex under construction in North Raleigh late Thursday morning. The man fell from a five-story scaffold, according to a spokesman for the state Department of Labor. Investigators have not yet made public the name of the worker or the company that he worked for, the spokesman said. The incident occurred at 11:08 a.m. in the 5700 block of Goodstone Drive, near Spring Forest and Louisburg roads. The N.C. Department of Labor is investigating.

Three construction workers injured after crane accident at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC

Three contract workers were injured Wednesday in an accident involving a crane inside a fenced-off construction area on the south side of Talley Student Center at N.C. State University, according to a university spokesman. The three men were taken for treatment to WakeMed Raleigh, according to a university spokesman. One reported a head injury, one reported a foot injury and one had back and neck pain, he said.

The head-on collision late Wednesday that killed two drivers is fourth fatal wreck involving drivers heading the wrong way on U.S. Highway 1 between Southern Pines and Sanford in the last six years, according to authorities. A Toyota SUV driven by Terrell Abbott, 36, of Texas, was southbound in the northbound lanes of U.S. 1 north of Southern Pines at about 10:45 p.m. when it slammed into a Toyota sedan driven by Jasmine Wicker, 20, of Sanford, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said.

Raleigh police closed northbound Creedmoor Road near the intersection with West Millbrook Road for a time Thursday morning after a car seriously injured a man shortly after 7 a.m.

At the same time, police had to close a section of Sunnybrook Road near Wake Technical Community College Health Sciences Campus because of an accident there.

Police said the man who was struck was in critical condition at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh.

A Raleigh man died Wednesday night after his car ran off the road on the westbound side of Interstate 40 in Johnston County and then flipped over the median cables and stopped on the eastbound side of the highway.

The State Highway Patrol said Ramsis Matta Soliman of 4634 Wedgewood Drive in Raleigh was near mile marker 322 at about 5:15 p.m. when his SUV went off the left side of the road, he over-corrected and went off the right side.

Justice Yasmeem Smith, 16, struck and killed by hit-and-run driver in Raleigh, North Carolina

A 16-year-old North Carolina girl died following a hit-and-run collision Thursday night. Justice Yasmeem Smith was hit around 9:40 p.m. in north Raleigh. She later died at a hospital. The suspect vehicle fled the scene and hasn't been found yet, Raleigh police said. Smith was a junior at Wake Forest High School. Counselors will go to the school Wednesday, when classes resume.
