The football player was miraculously unhurt in the 3:30 a.m. crash, which happened when his rental car hit a large amount of water on the turnpike while going about 65 mph to 70 mph. The car began to hydroplane, and the airbags deployed. Weatherford exited his vehicle and within two minutes, a second car hydroplaned out of control and struck the rental, which was totaled. Few details are available regarding the second driver. Weatherford called 911, and New Jersey state troopers drove him 45 miles home to Hoboken.
Two tour buses was traveling on Interstate 70, carrying bands that were going to perform in Denver that night. A spring storm brought fog and rain, making driving conditions treacherous. Rabbi Dovid Winiarz of Staten Island was killed when the driver of the Honda CR-V he was traveling in lost control on Route 23 in Harford County, Maryland and collided with another vehicle at around 8:10 a.m., according to Maryland State Police.
