The California Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that occurred about 12:30 p.m. when a vehicle traveling on Highway 99 went off the roadway and crashed into a tree.
A CHP spokesman said one person has been confirmed dead.
The crash occurred on southbound Highway 99 south of the Dillard Road offramp, south of Elk Grove. A southbound lane was closed for nearly two hours, reopening about 2:30 p.m.
A big rig has struck traffic safety barrels filled with sand south of Elk Grove on southbound Highway 99, causing a big traffic back-up.
The crash, which occurred about 6 a.m. Tuesday, caused about 25 gallons of diesel fuel to leak onto the highway. The traffic appeared to be backed up for 2.5 miles behind the crash near Twin Cities Road at 7:30 a.m.
CHP Officer Rich Wetzel is recommending Interstate 5 for motorist heading southbound from Sacramento.
