A big rig has struck traffic safety barrels filled with sand south of Elk Grove on southbound Highway 99, causing a big traffic back-up.

The crash, which occurred about 6 a.m. Tuesday, caused about 25 gallons of diesel fuel to leak onto the highway. The traffic appeared to be backed up for 2.5 miles behind the crash near Twin Cities Road at 7:30 a.m.

CHP Officer Rich Wetzel is recommending Interstate 5 for motorist heading southbound from Sacramento.

One lane remains open on Highway 99 at the crash. The diesel fuel will have to be cleaned up before the freeway completely opens
