Crash backs up traffic on southbound Highway 99

Monday, November 25, 2013A big rig has struck traffic safety barrels filled with sand south of Elk Grove on southbound Highway 99, causing a big traffic back-up.
The crash, which occurred about 6 a.m. Tuesday, caused about 25 gallons of diesel fuel to leak onto the highway. The traffic appeared to be backed up for 2.5 miles behind the crash near Twin Cities Road at 7:30 a.m.
CHP Officer Rich Wetzel is recommending Interstate 5 for motorist heading southbound from Sacramento.
One lane remains open on Highway 99 at the crash. The diesel fuel will have to be cleaned up before the freeway completely opens
