Escondido police arrested a man suspected of crashing a stolen van into another car, then running away Tuesday afternoon.

Richard Berumen, 38, of Escondido, was taken into custody on suspicion of felony hit-and-run causing injury and vehicle theft, police said.

A man called police shortly after 1 p.m. and said he’d just seen his stolen Toyota Sienna van being driven at Valley Parkway and Ash Street, police said. The man recognized it from its broken headlight even though it had the wrong license plate, Lanigan said.

A man suffered head injuries when he was struck by a car Tuesday night in Mt. Lebanon. Police say Michael Joseph Puccio, 30, remains in critical condition after he was hit by an SUV while attempting to cross Washington Road in an area where there are no crosswalks. "He was crossing Washington Road, wearing dark clothing, according to witness statements. The driver traveling north didn't see him and struck him," said Police Chief Coleman McDonough. The name of the 17-year-old driver is not being released. Police say right now they have no plans to file charges.
