A 26-year-old man accused of crashing his vehicle on a freeway near Lakeside, killing two passengers, has been charged with murder because he had a previous conviction for drunken driving.

Mario Alberto Casteneda Carranza pleaded not guilty Wednesday to murder and other felony charges, including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, DUI and cocaine possession. His bail was set at $1 million. If convicted in Superior Court, he could be sentenced to 30 years to life in prison.

An investigation was underway Thursday in the death of a 22-year-old woman who crashed a Jeep along Interstate 8 in Alpine, injuring a man in the front seat and a 1-year-old boy in a safety seat in the rear.

The woman braked to avoid slowing traffic, swerved, and the Jeep went down an embankment along eastbound lanes, west of Tavern Road, about 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Kevin Pearlstein.

A U.S. Marine was killed and three others were injured in a multi-vehicle crash early Saturday morning on Interstate 8 in near state Route 163, authorities said.

The crash was on the westbound side of I-8 about 5 a.m., according to the CHP. One of the vehicles crashed into a barrier and another three cars slammed into it.

The Medical Examiner's Office stated that person killed in the crash, later identified as Ricky Jones, was a 20-year-old, active-duty Marine.

A motorcyclist was killed Thursday afternoon in a fiery collision on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley, authorities said.

The eastbound motorcycle crashed into a car near Mission Center Road shortly after 4 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. Both vehicles then became engulfed in flames.

Passers-by stopped and performed CPR on the downed rider before the arrival of paramedics, who declared the victim dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

A fiery crash left an SUV and an RV charred Monday morning when both went over the side of Interstate 8 near Descanso and tumbled about 100 feet down a rocky embankment, authorities said.

Six people were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, a California Highway Patrol Officer said.

A San Diego man, 39, was driving an SUV west on I-8 east of state Route 79 about 9:55 a.m. when he made an unsafe lane change and sideswiped the RV, police said.

Traffic was backed up Tuesday night on Interstate 8 east in the Mission Valley area due to a multi-vehicle collision.

One vehicle was on its side, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision was reported about 6:35 p.m. near Mission Center Road.

A family of four was in one of the vehicles, the CHP said. They were able to get out on their own.

At least two lanes on eastbound Interstate 8 at Lake Murray Boulevard are blocked due to a multi-vehicle crash.

The crash happened just before 5:15 p.m., and authorities' response has prompted the closure of at least two lanes, backing up traffic for several miles.

The roadway was cleared shortly before 6 p.m.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
