6 injured, taken to hospital, after SUV and RV collide, crash over embankment and burn on I-8.
Fiery crash ignites Pine Valley brush.
A fiery crash left an SUV and an RV charred Monday morning when both went over the side of Interstate 8 near Descanso and tumbled about 100 feet down a rocky embankment, authorities said.
Six people were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, a California Highway Patrol Officer said.
A San Diego man, 39, was driving an SUV west on I-8 east of state Route 79 about 9:55 a.m. when he made an unsafe lane change and sideswiped the RV, police said.
The RV was driven by a 53-year-old man who was vacationing from Colorado Springs with his wife and three children, police said.
The collision forced both vehicles off the road and down the hillside.
The SUV was going between 70 to 75 miles per hour when it struck the RV, which was traveling at 50 to 55 miles per hour, police said.
The drivers and passengers were able to make it back to the road and were taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego. The mother suffered a cut to the head and her children suffered some scrapes. Both drivers complained of pain.
Flames from the crash ignited about ¼ of an acre of brush, a Cal Fire Capt. said.
A lane was closed for several hours while the crash was investigated
