Michigan State Police say that about 70 vehicles were involved in the westbound lanes of I-94 and 20 in the eastbound in Friday's massive pileup between mile markers 90 and 92. About 50 of those vehicles are semis, including one that was hauling 40,000 pounds of fireworks that began launching on the scene. Another truck carrying hazardous material caught fire, prompting an evacuation of the area in a three-mile radius from Mile Marker 90 near the border of Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties.

It was about 3:35am when a car full of students caused the intial rear-end collision that led to a seven-car pileup on I-94. The 23-year-old driver of that vehicle has been arrested for drunken driving, and while many people sustained minor injuries from the crash, no one was seriously hurt.
