Tampa-St. Petersburg, FLA truck that had been driving on State Road 70 struck a tree and caught fire, with two people inside. The driver, Wilfred Calvin Jones, 55, was not able to escape and died at the scene. 15-year-old Chicago Gainer was in the passenger seat, trapped in the vehicle. Passersby Levi Teuton, 35, and Doug Dewell stopped and helped to extinguish the flames. They were able to free Gainer, saving his life, before propane tanks in the truck exploded. Gainer was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

Tampa-St. Petersburg, FLJessica Costanzo and Gabriella "Gigi" Longpre were killed in a devastating car accident. The young women were heading home from IHOP on State Road 70 around 2 a.m. when a Ford SUV ran the red light at the intersection and slammed into them. The driver of the SUV was allegedly 16-year-old Emerson Herrera. Manatee County Sheriff's investigators say after the wreck, he got into a friend's truck and took off before officers got there. That truck was stolen. Charges are pending against Herrera. He has a criminal history that includes accessory after the fact for murder.
