A woman is behind bars and charged in a hit and run crash that killed a 59-year-old man from the Orange Mound community.

Curteria Leuellyn, 21, will face a judge Monday on a list of charges including vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident.

Police say Leuellyn was driving a Chevrolet Malibu she borrowed from a friend Saturday night. According to officers, she was driving on Deadrick Avenue near Hugenot Street, when she ran off the road and hit 59-year-old Curtis Echols on the sidewalk.

Interstate 40 at Canada Road in Lakeland was shutdown for hours after a crash involving multiple vehicles, according to the Shelby County Fire Department.

The crash of at least six vehicles sent five people to the hospital. None of the victims transported suffered life threatening injuries.

One person was cut out of a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Eastbound lanes opened up late Tuesday night and traffic moving again.

According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation's smartmap, the crash happened around 8:40 p.m.

A 25-year-old man was killed when his car left the road and flipped early Wednesday morning, police said. The incident happened just after 3 a.m. near 75 S. Mendenhall in East Memphis. According to police, Joseph Gibson was heading south on Mendenhall in a 2008 Chevy Silverado when it hit a curb with the front tire on the passenger’s side. The car went airborne and landed in the driveway of a home at 63 S. Mendenhall, traveled on its side across the yard and struck a tree. The car kept sliding, smashing into an iron fence at 75 S. Mendenhall.

One person was killed and several others injured in a two-car crash early Sunday that sent both vehicles careening down an embankment off Tenn. 385 near Kirby.

One of the cars was trying to merge onto the divided highway when it collided with another car going west about 12:40 a.m.

The collision sent both cars off the road. Driver Shawtisha Bonner, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 26-year-old woman was transported to the Regional Medical Center in critical condition and two men, 25 and 29, were transported in noncritical condition.

A man is behind bars for crushing an Memphis police officer between a car while allegedly driving drunk.

It all started Saturday night at Poplar Avenue and Willett Street during a routine traffic stop, but in the blink of an eye it changed several lives.

Blue police lights lit up Poplar and Willett Saturday evening; Julie Montgomery was inside her Midtown apartment when the crash happened.

Officer Katrina Cobb, who was making a traffic stop on Poplar when the driver of a black Jeep got out of the car to retrieve her purse from the trunk.

A 29-year-old man was ejected from his vehicle and killed early on Saturday in a one-car accident at Mendenhall and Marcel Cove, Memphis police said.

The wreck was reported at about 2:06 a.m.

According to investigators, the victim’s vehicle was traveling northbound on Mendenhall, south of Marcel Cove when it left the roadway and struck a utility pole.

The vehicle went airborne, overturned, struck the street sign, bending it to the ground and then hit a fire hydrant.
