Washington State Office of Public Defense
The mission of the Washington State Office of Public Defense (OPD) is "to implement the constitutional and statutory guarantees of counsel and to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of indigent defense services funded by the state... ." RCW 2.70.005. Established by the Legislature in 1996, OPD is an independent agency of the judicial branch.
Island County Public Records Requests
You can make any request you have for public records by writing to the specific office's public records officer identified below. The request should identify the particular record desired with enough specificity so it can be located. Individual county departments may have specific public record request forms available. Copies of records shall be made at the costs indicated in Resolution No. C-33-96.
Island County Jail
Island County Jail is a low security correctional facility. Inmates are housed together in dormitories or cubicle housing. They are provided with access to programs and training that will help to rehabilitate them so that they’re ready to get their lives back on track when released. As a low security facility, Island County Jail has a lower staff to inmate ratio than medium or high security jails.
Island County Prosecuting Attorney
The mission of the Island County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office is to meet our statutory and constitutional duties to the citizens of Island County and the State of Washington; to vigorously, justly, and efficiently prosecute those who commit crimes in Island County; to provide excellent legal advice and services to the governing bodies and elected officials of Island County; to be effective advocates for the continuous improvement of the justice system; and to set the standard for the highest level of professionalism and ethics for the practice of law in Island County.
Island County Superior Court
Island County Superior Court is a general jurisdiction trial court with responsibility for civil matters involving more than $300, unlawful detainers, and injunctions; felony criminal cases; misdemeanor criminal cases not otherwise provided for by law; family law,including dissolutions, child support, adoptions, parentage, and domestic-violence protection matters; probate and guardianship matters; juvenile offender matters; juvenile dependencies,including abused and neglected children, children in need of services, at-risk youth, and truancies; mental illness and involuntary commitment matters.
Island County District Court
As a court of limited jurisdiction, the District Court is responsible for the following types of matters: civil litigation matters up to $75,000; small claims matters up to $5,000; nuisance violations; vehicle tow and impound hearings; anti-harassment orders; domestic violence protection orders; infractions(traffic, non-traffic and parking); misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor criminal cases; felony expedited cases; felony preliminary hearings; search warrants; and death inquests.
Volunteer Lawyer Program of Island County
Clients can meet with a volunteer attorney for 30-45 minutes at our twice monthly clinics in Coupeville and Oak Harbor. The VLP helps people with family law problems, landlord tenant issues, divorce, child support, child custody, bankruptcy, wills, and other non-criminal matters.
