One person was killed in a crash Wednesday afternoon on Interstate-55 near south suburban Romeoville, state police said. A box truck crashed into the back of a semi before 3 p.m. on northbound I-55 near the Weber Road exit, police said. Video of the scene showed the front of the box truck was barely recognizable. One northbound lane of the interstate was reopend by 5 p.m. after being shut down for a couple of hours, but traffic remained snarled traffic in both directions as the crash investigation continued.

An 8-year-old girl died Tuesday evening when a minivan collided with a semi-truck on Route 53.

Madison Frost was riding in the third row passenger seat of a white 2010 Dodge Caravan being driver by her mother, Tina Frost, 36, of Crest Hill, Police Chief Fred Hayes said. Maria Frost, 15, a 20-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman also were riding in the Caravan.

At least 20 vehicles were involved in a crash that shut down northbound I-57 near Peotone between Manhattan-Monee Road and Wilmington-Peotone Road, officials said.

Several semis are involved, Illinois State Police said, and one vehicle may be trapped underneath a semi. Emergency crews brought in extrication equipment and requested heavy cranes.

Officials have not said what caused the crash, but low visibility was reported through the Chicago area on Thursday afternoon.

Three separate crashes involving seven vehicles on a one-mile stretch of I-55 closed northbound lanes of the expressway for about two-and-a-half hours during the morning rush Monday near southwest suburban Channahon.

Traffic was diverted from northbound lanes of I-55 between Bluff Road and U.S. 6 about 8:15 a.m. while police worked to clear three separate crashes that caused "several" injuries around 7:45 a.m.

No one died in any of the crashes, but at least two people were injured, police said. The left lane of the expressway was reopened about 10:15 a.m.
