Fog caused a pileup involving multiple vehicles on I-57 near southwest suburban Peotone Thursday, bringing traffic to a halt.

At least 20 vehicles were involved in a crash that shut down northbound I-57 near Peotone between Manhattan-Monee Road and Wilmington-Peotone Road, officials said.

Several semis are involved, Illinois State Police said, and one vehicle may be trapped underneath a semi. Emergency crews brought in extrication equipment and requested heavy cranes.

Officials have not said what caused the crash, but low visibility was reported through the Chicago area on Thursday afternoon.

Illinois State Police are directing motorists off I-57 at Manhattan-Monee Road and letting them back on at Wilmington-Peotone Road.
