A 33-year-old man lost control of his car along Intestate 94 in Maple Grove, hit a utility equipment building and was killed, authorities said.

The crash occurred shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday on eastbound I-94 near Maple Grove Parkway, according to the State Patrol.

Killed was Andrew Hou, of Edina, the patrol said.

He was wearing a seat belt, and alcohol use does not appear to be a factor, the patrol added.

The patrol did note that the driving surface was wet at the time.

A driver on probation for a traffic offense was jailed Saturday on suspicion of criminal vehicular homicide in connection with the Friday night death of a Minneapolis mail handler.

Charles R. Lord, 65, died at North Memorial Medical Center at 1:39 a.m. Saturday — 3½ hours after the accident at W. Broadway and Logan Avenue N., according to the Hennepin County medical examiner’s office.

A 32-year-old suspect ran away from the scene after Lord was run over on a sidewalk and the van ran into a building shortly after 10 p.m. Friday, police said.

A man killed in a crash that shut down part of westbound Highway 55 at Lexington Avenue in Mendota Heights has been identified.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Kevin Hough, 55, of Farmington was killed when he was hit by 53-year-old Gary Ferm of Bloomington, who was eastbound on Hwy. 55. Ferm's vehicle veered into the westbound lanes and hit Hough.

Ferm suffered non-life threatening injuries, the state patrol said.

Roads were dry at the time.

A 51-year-old Minneapolis bicyclist is still in critical condition after a crash involving a sport-utility vehicle at the corner of Snelling and Summit Avenues on Saturday morning. St. Paul police identified the man Sunday as David Joseph Wuest. The department said it continues to investigate the incident and that no further information is expected until at least Monday.

A two vehicle crash in Pierz killed 81-year-old Wilma Johnson, of Freedhem, Minn., after she pulled her car onto Main Street near 4th Avenue NE. and was broadsided by a pickup truck, the patrol said. There were no critical injuries reported among the others.

Neglecting to wear a seat belt and being under the influence of alcohol were noted as factors in a single-vehicle crash that killed a young man from east-central Minnesota. Cole R. Hegge, 24, of Hinckley, was heading west in his car on Hwy. 18 west of Finlayson shortly after 7 p.m., when he fell asleep, drove onto the right shoulder, hit trees and rolled over, according to the State Patrol. He was thrown from the vehicle and was dead at the scene. The patrol said Hegge did not have on his seat belt and evidence at the scene indicated that he had been drinking before getting behind the wheel.

A 21-year-old Clarkston man is dead after his sport utility vehicle struck a tree in Washtenaw County. Police in Northfield Township, where the crash happened about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, have not released the man’s name, pending notification of family. It’s unclear why the man drove off the road, according to Northfield Township Police Lt. Tim Greene. However, the vehicle appears to have been speeding.

A crash near here involving two semis left one driver dead this morning on an icy stretch of Interstate 94, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. One semi rear-ended the other about 4 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near milepost 24, the patrol said. The name of the driver who died has not been released. The other driver, Thomas Harrington Jr., 53, of St. Paul, was not hurt, a patrol Sgt. said. The patrol continues to investigate the crash. Police urged drivers to slow down and use caution on the roads, which are snowy and icy in spots.

A driver under the influence of drugs and alcohol swerved into oncoming traffic on a well-traveled St. Louis Park street and struck a vehicle coming the other way head-on, leaving the owner of a well-known Hopkins hardware dead in the other vehicle, authorities said Thursday. The crash Tuesday night on Minnetonka Boulevard killed James Hance, 75, of Brooklyn Park, according to the Hennepin County medical examiner’s office. Hance was the second-generation owner of Hance Hardware in downtown Hopkins.

The Rogers Police Department has identified the woman who crashed into a lake in Rogers on Monday afternoon as Karen Torgerson.

According to Rogers police, Torgerson was driving on Interstate 94 eastbound near a waste management company, VEIT USA, at 4:10 p.m. when she crashed into the lake.

Cody Shirley was in the area when he saw the car crash. Police say he went into the lake to help rescue Torgerson.

Torgerson was taken to the hospital, but was expected to be OK.
