Ohio Turnpike officials are stopping drivers from getting on the toll road at several interchanges after a series of pileups shut it down. The State Highway Patrol says two people died and a trooper was seriously injured in snowy crashes involving at least 50 vehicles on the turnpike. A turnpike spokesman says they hope to open one eastbound lane of traffic around 6 p.m. Pileups stretched across a 2-mile section in the eastbound lanes of the toll road Wednesday afternoon between Toledo and Cleveland. Turnpike spokesman Adam Greenslade says traffic there is backed up just over seven miles.

Black ice was to blame in a seven-car pileup involving a police car on an elevated highway in northeast New Jersey Sunday, police say, but no one sustained serious injuries in the wreck. A car headed east on New Jersey Route 4 near Paramus Road in Fair Lawn hit a patch of black ice about 9 p.m., overturned and hit an exit ramp, police say. Shortly after, a Bergen County police officer tried to stop to help, but also hit the patch of ice and crashed.
