Taft High 7-12 senior Cayden Thomas Fitch, who recently was honored as an Eagle Scout and was bound for the U.S. Navy upon graduation, was killed Friday in a head-on traffic accident on Highway 22 about three miles west of Dallas. According to Oregon State Police (OSP), Fitch, 18, was driving a 1995 Ford Ranger pickup with his passenger/father, Bryan Fitch, 43, an OSP trooper out of Newport Area Command who was off duty when the crash occurred. Cayden Fitch was pronounced dead at the scene. His father was transported by ambulance to Salem Hospital with serious injuries.

One person is dead and another seriously injured after they were struck by a car in a dark section of Edgewater St. NW in Salem. A Salem Police spokesperson stated that the two were in a dark part of Edgewater St. NW as it merges onto Highway 22. One pedestrian was dead when medical crews arrived. The second person has life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the hospital. The driver that hit the pair stopped. Okada says investigators on scene see no sign the driver was impaired or driving recklessly.
