Police recieved report of someone going north in the southbound lanes of I-880 at about 12:30am, and shortly thereafter a report of a crash on that road. Investigators have determined that a 22-year-old woman was driving the wrong way on I-880 and collided head-on with a pickup truck. The collision caused the woman's car to break in half and catch fire, as well as trap the woman inside the car. Unfortunately the fire could not be put out and the woman was not rescued in time, eventually dying at the scene.

Three of the people involved had serious injuries, and six others had moderate to minor injuries. The crash caused the semi-truck to spill its contents of liquid concrete all over the highway. At least one car in the crash caught fire as result of the chaos.
