Two young people killed Thursday while taking a late-night joy ride in an excavator parked at a logging site near Wilkeson have been identified as Jared Lanphear and Aeriel Strough, both 22 years old. The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s office said Lanphear is from Buckley. No information was immediately available on where Strough lived. The two died after drinking at a bar with the excavator operator, who took them back to his work site for a ride, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

A man died while scuba diving near the Edmonds ferry dock on Saturday afternoon. A ferry crew notified 911 dispatchers when they spotted the diver floating in the water near the dock at about 12:15 p.m. "The crew deployed a small rescue boat from the ferry and brought the diver to the beach south of the dock. Firefighters on the beach performed CPR, but were unable to revive the diver," said Leslie Hynes, public information officer for Snohomish County Fire District 1, which provides fire and emergency medical service in the City of Edmonds.

The Grant County sheriff's office says a float plane pilot died Saturday evening when he crashed on Banks Lake near Steamboat Rock State Park. KPQ radio reports 60-year-old Kenneth A. Berger of Monroe, Washington, was attempting to take off from Banks Lake around 5 p.m. Witnesses say the plane went nose-down in the water and sank. Nearby boaters dove into the lake, released Berger's seatbelt and brought him to a waiting ambulance on shore. He was pronounced dead a short time later. An investigation into the cause of the crash will continue Sunday.

Two state troopers sustained minor injuries when their cars collided early Tuesday as they were rushing to help in a stolen car chase near Lynnwood. The patrol cars collided at an intersection when one failed to make a turn and were totaled in the collision. The two troopers were treated for minor injuries at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and released. One man had a concussion and broken finger and the other had bruised legs. The incident began just after midnight when another trooper pulled over a car on Interstate 5 south of Everett.

Eight Stevens County students injured in a bus slide-off accident early Wednesday were evaluated for non-life-threatening injuries in Spokane, according to the Mary Walker School District. Twenty-seven students were aboard school bus No. 6 when it slid onto its side south of Springdale, Wash. All passengers were evaluated by medical personnel at the scene and were either loaded onto another bus or released to parents or guardians, the district said. The roadway was described as a “sheet of ice” by law enforcement on scene during the incident, which occurred around 8 a.m.

A woman driver accused of first trying to run down a deputy who stopped her for not wearing a seat belt, then crashing her car, trying to scale a 6-foot fence and taking a swing at the deputy told the officer she really didn’t want to go back to jail. The woman eventually told a Spokane Valley sheriff’s deputy that she “got scared” Saturday night because she knew she had a suspended license and methamphetamine in her purse.

A man was killed in a logging accident Monday in the woods near Morton.

The Lewis County sheriff’s office says 21-year-old Tyler Bryan of Toledo was struck by a log dangling from a cable as it was being hauled about 1,500 feet up a steep slope. Sgt. Rob Snaza says the spinning log hit Bryan as he was working on the ground below.

His father, Ken Bryan of Toledo, told The Daily News Tyler and his fiancee were expecting their first child in two months.

The Puget Sound region made it through two winter storms that rolled into the Pacific Northwest relatively unscathed.

The third one? Not so much.

A band of snow spread across the Puget Sound region Saturday evening, dropping anywhere from 2-6 inches across the region, making it the largest snow event to hit the Seattle area since the big snow and ice storm of January 2012.

A sudden snowfall just before dawn Friday, Feb. 7 has created hazardous driving conditions and put school buses on snow routes in the Bellingham and Lummi Nation school districts.

Western Washington University remains open, but has issued a snow and ice warning and has urged students to take appropriate precautions before trying to walk or drive to school.

The city has urged drivers to take extra precautions in the wake of the recent snowfall, but crashes are already more frequent.

A 14-year-old Burbank boy was fatally injured in a snowboarding accident at Ski Bluewood near Dayton. A ski area spokeswoman stated that the ski patrol found him injured shortly after noon Saturday at the top of a beginner trail called the Country Road run. A Life Flight helicopter was requested but unable to respond because of the weather. An ambulance took the boy to Columbia County Hospital in Dayton where he died. He was an eighth-grader at Columbia Middle School in Burbank.
