A Unified Police officer who stopped to help a motorist early Friday morning was injured when his cruiser was sideswiped by a suspected drunk, hit-and-run driver on Interstate 215.

The accident call came in at 2:05 a.m. from 245 West and westbound I-215, where the UPD officer had pulled over to assist a stranded motorist, said a UPD Lt.

The officer still was inside his cruiser when a pickup truck struck the cruiser and then drove away from the scene. A Utah Highway Patrol trooper spotted the truck a short time later, pulled it over and arrested the driver.

A four-vehicle crash with at least two minor injuries brought commuters to a crawl Thursday morning on Bangerter Highway.

The 8 a.m. accident closed down two northbound lanes for about an hour on a West Valley City stretch of the highway, near 4000 South and 3800 West.

A West Valley City police Lt. said the accident began when a red pickup truck rear-ended a car, triggering more crashes involving another, red pickup which collided with the same car again, forcing it to sideswipe a second passenger car.

More than 150 sheep died when the truck that was carrying them crashed early Friday in Provo Canyon. The semitrailer truck was carrying about 340 sheep on State Road 189 just before 3 a.m. when the truck overturned in the shoulder, said Utah Highway Patrol trooper Evan Kirby. About half the sheep died, Kirby said. The driver was believed to have suffered no serious injuries, Kirby said.

A crash and inclement weather have shut down Daniels Canyon in Wasatch County. A crash involving two semi-trucks was reported about 11:33 a.m. on U.S. Route 40, said a Utah Highway Patrol Sg. No further details, including any injuries, were immediately available about the crash, except that it was near mile post 30, about 20 miles south of Heber. By 2:13 p.m., one lane had reopened and traffic, in alternating directions, was allowed through the canyon.

Travel on Highway 6 was reduced to a single lane Friday morning near Utah County’s Soldiers Summit when a semi-rig’s trailer tipped over. A Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. said the cause of the accident was under investigation, but for some reason the eastbound truck’s second of two trailers loaded with paint tipped over at the summit about 6:30 a.m. The driver was not injured, no other drivers were involved, and none of the paint leaked. UHP expected traffic through the accident scene to resume to normal by noon, after the trailer is uprighted and wreckage cleared.

Wednesday afternoon Layton police responded to an accident on I-15 that left the freeway closed for a short time.

A car reportedly hit the median and then bounced back into traffic. The car then slid beneath a semi-trailer and became wedged as the semi continued to move for a short distance.

A male passenger was air lifted from the scene in critical condition. Two other females were transported by ground, but no word on their condition.

A hit-and-run semi-trailer rig driver crashed into a power pole in central Salt Lake City early Tuesday and triggered a brief, localized electrical outage.

The 6:48 a.m. crash occurred at 700 East and South Temple Street. Police said they were trying to locate the big rig, which left the scene before they arrived.

It took emergency crews an hour to clear the scene for traffic through the area to resume.

A Rocky Mountain Power spokesman said that as of 8:15 a.m., no customers were reported to be without service in the area of the crash.

A traffic accident near Vernal killed one person on Monday, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

UHP authorities said that a car driven by Monte Mitchell 36, and a semi truck collided on U.S. Route 40 about 8 miles east of Vernal near mile marker 153.

One person died in the crash, but authorities did not immediately release any information about that person’s identification Monday afternoon.

The Tribune will provide more information as it becomes available.

A potato-hauling semi truck toppled over Friday morning near Cedar City, mashing freeway traffic for several hours.

The accident happened about 8 a.m. on Interstate 15 when the southbound truck lost control on Black Ridge, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. The truck slid, then tipped onto its left side, blocking the freeway.

A black Mazda driven by a pregnant woman collided with the truck after it had toppled over, UHP reports. The woman and the truck driver were both shaken up and taken to a hospital in St. George.

A 22-year-old woman was fatally struck by a pickup truck early Tuesday morning as she crossed the intersection of Main Street and Antelope Drive in Layton.

Layton police Lt. Shawn Horton said the incident occurred about 6:30 a.m. Jessica Jones of Layton was walking southbound on the east side of the intersection when she attempted to cross.
