Officials don’t yet know how fast he was going, but 26-year-old Sergio Acero was riding his motorcycle fast enough around a curve to crash into a large concrete manhole cover. Chapel Hill police responded to a call that came in around 6:30 a.m. Saturday, and found Acero alive but severely injured along Estes Drive Extension near Seawell School Road. “It was a pretty bad crash,” said a Lt. with the Chapel Hill Police Department. “The motorcycle went one way and he went the other.” Acero died at UNC Hospital.

The driver of a stolen pickup was killed after crashing into power poles in Pittsburg on Thursday night and knocking out power to nearly 1,200 PG&E customers in the surrounding area, police and utility officials said. Around 11:40 p.m., residents in the 600 block of Rockspray Circle heard a vehicle starting outside their home and looked outside to see someone driving off in their truck, police said. Police said the residents tried to follow the driver in another car, but stopped after he began speeding at about 70 miles per hour on West 10th Street.

Shortly before 3 a.m. Friday, Seattle Fire Department crews were called to the crash in the 5300 block of Fourth Avenue South in Seattle’s Industrial District. Police said a 1998 Ford Ranger pickup was headed north on Fourth and a 1997 Toyota Camry was headed south when they collided near the intersection of Fourth and Bennett Street. The driver of the Camry was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup was transported to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

A missing snowmobiler was found dead after he apparently crashed on an ice-covered lake in Walworth County over the weekend. Searchers were called to Lake Delavan around 8 a.m. Sunday to look for the 51-year-old man who had been missing about 12 hours. Investigators said the man's family found his snowmobile out on the frozen lake Sunday morning and called police.

A West Charlotte Man is dead after an ATV crash Saturday afternoon. Police tell us Marvin Andrew Davis died during a ride with family friends. It happened in a wooded area near Dillard Valley Road. They say Davis was riding down a grassy hill at a high rate of speed attempting to jump a creek bed when the ATV struck the embankment on the other side of the creek. Davis was thrown off the ATV. Police say Davis was wearing a helmet.

A man faces misdemeanor charges after a passenger died in a head-on crash on a snowy Chatham County road Wednesday. Miguel Arquimides Caseres, 45, of Siler City, was charged following a crash around 1:15 p.m. on Silk Road near Romine Pike Road. Caseres was driving a 1996 Ford car on a snow-covered road when it crossed the center line and crashed into a 1999 Chevrolet, troopers said. The passenger in the Chevrolet died. The passenger's name hasn't been released pending notification of next-of-kin. Caseres also was charged with exceeding a safe speed.

A motorcycle wreck on Interstate 10 at Queen Creek Road closed the westbound lanes of the freeway Wednesday morning, according to officials. Arizona Department of Public Safety officials worked alongside the Gila River Police Department to close the freeway at 8:30 a.m., said a DPS spokesman. The lanes were reopened about an hour and a half later, just before 10 a.m., according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. The motorcyclist was traveling faster than the speed of traffic on I-10 when he hit the back of an SUV and tumbled across the freeway, according to Garcia.

One person was killed, another hospitalized following a single vehicle accident in north St. Louis City. Authorities say a teen driver was reportedly joy riding when he lost control on ice and crashed at North Euclid and Calvin Avenues at approximately 3:30 p.m. Witnesses at the scene said the driver was traveling at a high-rate of speed before he lost control and struck the tree. The 15-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The male teenage passenger was rushed to the hospital in critical, unstable condition.

State environmental police are investigating a fatal weekend snowmobile crash in Winchendon. A department spokesman stated that a 49-year-old local man died when his snowmobile struck a tree at a high rate of speed at about 1 p.m. Saturday. Authorities identified the man as Michael McGregor. The crash occurred at the Lake Dennison recreation area. Winchendon police and firefighters and environmental police responded. The man was taken to Heywood Hospital in Gardner.
