Phoenix, AZA suspected drunken driver is in custody after police said he struck and killed a pedestrian crossing a Phoenix roadway mid-block and then sped away.
The driver, later identified as Vernon Traylor, 66, was heading southbound in the area of 1800 N. 32nd Street just before 9 p.m. Friday, Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said.
Traylor hit 53-year-old Ruben Jimenez Solis, Martos said. Solis initially stopped at the scene but when police arrived, he accelerated and sped away.
Witnesses were able to provide officers with information that resulted in the suspect's arrest.

Phoenix, AZAn El Mirage woman accused of drunken driving and leaving the scene of an accident had her 7-year-old son in the vehicle when she was arrested early Saturday morning, police said.
Tiffany Pemberton, 31, of El Mirage, faces several charges, including aggravated DUI, aggravated assault, endangerment and hit-and-run with injuries.
The hit-and-run accident occurred just after midnight Saturday in the area of 107th and Olive avenues. The two occupants of the other vehicle were injured but are expected to be OK.
Pemberton fled the scene and half-a-mile later, ran out of gas.

Phoenix, AZA man is in custody in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident in Phoenix.
Darren Darnelle Hanson, 21, called police about 35 minutes after Tuesday night's accident and turned himself in, officers said.
Hanson is being held on suspicion of leaving the scene of a fatal collision.
Investigators said Matthew James Helmick, 35, was crossing in the area of 2300 West Maryland Avenue about 7 p.m. when he was struck by a car, which left the scene.
Police said Helmick was transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
The case remains under investigation.

Phoenix, AZPhoenix police are looking for an ATV rider who fled the scene of a fatal dirt bike accident in Phoenix on Tuesday.
The vehicles collided in the desert near the 25,000 block of North 57th Street around 5 p.m.
The rider of the dirt bike, Frisco Davidson-Spurs Yankolovich, 20, was rushed to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries, said a Phoenix Police Sgt.
The rider of the quad stopped and looked at the victim, then left the scene, police said.
Police said there are no signs of the ATV rider.

Phoenix, AZA woman in her 20s was killed in a hit-and-run at 19th Avenue and Baseline Road around 8 p.m. on Saturday, according to officials.
The intersection is closed until further notice as Phoenix police investigate the scene, the Phoenix police said.
UPDATE: Alexandra Morales has been identified as the victim in this incident. 12/15/13
