Pedestrian killed in Phoenix hit-and-run crash
A suspected drunken driver is in custody after police said he struck and killed a pedestrian crossing a Phoenix roadway mid-block and then sped away.
The driver, later identified as Vernon Traylor, 66, was heading southbound in the area of 1800 N. 32nd Street just before 9 p.m. Friday, Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said.
Traylor hit 53-year-old Ruben Jimenez Solis, Martos said. Solis initially stopped at the scene but when police arrived, he accelerated and sped away.
Witnesses were able to provide officers with information that resulted in the suspect's arrest.
Solis was rushed to a local trauma center where he died a short time later.
Traylor was booked into the Maricopa County Fourth Avenue Jail on charges of DUI and leaving the scene of a fatal traffic collision.
