A motorcyclist died early today as a result of an accident on the northbound San Diego (5) Freeway, authorities said.

A San Diego Fire-Rescue Department dispatcher said the accident occurred near West Washington Street in the city's Middletown neighborhood northeast of San Diego International Airport,

The accident was reported around 1 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol online incident log.

Authorities were trying to determine Friday why a FedEx truck roared across the grassy median of a Northern California freeway and slammed into a charter bus, causing a fiery explosion that left 10 people dead and dozens more injured. The National Transportation Safety Board sent an investigative "go team" from Washington to the scene on Interstate 5 near the town of Orland, about 100 miles north of Sacramento. The crash killed the drivers of the truck and bus, five students and three chaperones. The bus passengers were high school seniors on their way to visit the campus of Humboldt State

A driver was found dead early Wednesday morning after a pickup truck went off the Interstate-5 freeway near SeaWorld in Mission Bay and collided into a palm tree.

The crash occurred at about 1:30 a.m. on the I-5 southbound off-ramp at Sea World Drive. According to California Highway Patrol, a Nissan pickup truck left the freeway, rolled over and hit the tree, leaving the driver trapped inside.

Responding firefighters used the Jaws of Life to take the doors and roof off. However, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Vancouver man driving a motorcycle died in a three-vehicle crash Monday afternoon on Interstate 5 just south of Ridgefield, and two other drivers were hospitalized. The collision occurred around 1 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the freeway under the Carty Road overpass. A Ford F-250 pickup driven by Eldon L. Ford, 33, of Ontario, Ore., slowed to pull onto the right shoulder and was struck from behind by a Honda CR-V driven by Wanda K. Dodd, 48, of Bellingham. Dodd then lost control of her vehicle and struck a Harley-Davison motorcycle driven in the middle lane by Dennis G.

A two-vehicle crash Wednesday injured 11 people, including children, on northbound I-5 just north of La Palma Avenue.

Authorities issued an hourlong SigAlert that was canceled around 1 p.m.

The crash happened about 11:45 a.m. when a red Mini Cooper in the No. 2 lane made an unsafe lane change and hit the side of an GMC Yukon, California Highway Patrol Officer Stacy Willits said. The Yukon spun across all lanes, hit the center divider and overturned, she said.

“There were no other vehicles involved, which is pretty much a miracle,” Willits said.

Alcohol appears to have played a role in a fatal wrong-way two-car accident that occurred early Thursday on Interstate 5 near Medford. Oregon State Police is asking witnesses to come forward in connection with the crash, which took place around 3:15 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-5 about five miles south of Medford. OSP, Jackson County Sheriff's Office, local fire and medical personnel, and ODOT were dispatched to milepost 24, said Lieutenant Gregg Hastings, an OSP spokesman.

A Ridgefield man was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon in a vehicle collision along Interstate 5 in Castle Rock. Angelina Puris, 63, of Centralia was driving north on the freeway in the left lane near Milepost 49 when she lost control of her Nissan Sentra and swerved to the left. She crossed the median and went into the southbound lanes, where she struck a Mazda MZ3 driven by Robert Huling, 72, of Ridgefield. Puris and Huling were transported to PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center in Longview. Puris was later transported to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland.

Eight people have been injured, one seriously, in multiple crashes that involved nearly two dozen vehicles on southbound Interstate 5 and created a backup that at one point stretched for 10 miles. Washington state troopers and tow trucks worked to clear the area and three southbound lanes had reopened by late Tuesday afternoon. All in all, 20 vehicles were involved. Weather may have been a factor, and the crash involved the dangerous combination of rain, sunbreak and reflection on wet roads.

A pedestrian was seriously injured in a crash that closed most of south Interstate 5 in downtown San Diego for about 40 minutes Thursday afternoon, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

A witness said the person was hit by a passing vehicle while running from the right shoulder of the freeway near Park Boulevard about 1:20 p.m., according to the CHP’s website.

Four of the freeway’s six lanes were closed and traffic was backed up to Old Town Avenue while the crash was investigated.

The man killed in an Everett crash Thursday night has been identified as Paul S. Linari, 21, of Everett, according to the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office. A man was killed in a crash Thursday night into a guardrail in Everett, and another man from the vehicle tried to run away. Police tracked him down and detained him for questioning. A woman was injured in the crash and treated at a hospital. Police say the dead man was found in the road after the crash and died at the scene. The other man ran off as officers arrived. He was found in a search of the area.
