Storms raced through the stop sign at Empire and Helena and smashed into Smith’s Ford pickup truck. The collision drove Smith’s pickup into a telephone pole, according to court records. The pole snapped and landed in a nearby yard. Debris littered the intersection. Three people were injured in a two-vehicle collision on Highland Road just south of Shelton Matlock Road Wednesday afternoon. Martin L Chappell, 50 of Shelton, was northbound on Highland Road in a 1988 Subaru Station Wagon. About 4:25 PM, the Subaru crossed the center line into the southbound lane of Highland Road and struck a northbound 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe as the SUV tried to avoid a collision by pulling to the left. A Harley-Davidson motorcycle was stopped just east of Collins Road, waiting to make a left turn, when a Honda Accord heading the same direction failed to stop, hitting the motorcycle from behind. The couple on the motorcycle were taken to Skagit Valley Hospital. The passenger, 55-year-old Kathleen Mask, died at the hospital of multiple blunt trauma. The Washington State Patrol has identified the woman killed in a Tuesday night accident on state Highway 2 about four miles north of Spokane. Dorothy J. Ryan, 47, of Spokane was walking in the highway’s northbound lane at 8:20 p.m. when she was hit by 2002 Ford Focus driven by Sara M. Babcock, 20, of Chattaroy. A news release from the WSP said Ryan was intoxicated. She was taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, the release said. Babcock, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured.
