Police say a Rhode Island man has died after his pickup truck struck a tree on Cape Cod.

The 50-year-old Woonsocket, R.I., man, later identified as Ronald Conn, died at a hospital after the crash in Falmouth at about 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The Falmouth fire dept. said the impact was on the truck’s driver’s side and the vehicle as wrapped around the tree. It took rescuers nearly 45 minutes to extract the driver.

The driver, the only occupant of the truck, had multiple injuries and his condition deteriorated when he was freed.

The cause remains under investigation.

Firefighters used a metal-cutting tool to remove the roof of a car and free the driver after a collision on Route 5 north Tuesday sent two people to the hospital and closed the busy road to traffic for a while, officials said.

"They had to cut the roof off to get to the guy. There was a bunch of spare parts in the street: a wheel, an axle," said a Fire Department spokesman.
