The Germans have so many wonderful phrases, but a favorite of mine is “Fremdschämen,” meaning external shame. Basically, it’s what you feel when you’re embarrassed on someone’s behalf because of something stupid they did.

It seems a week doesn’t go by these days without a report of a major hack, whether it’s a giant retailer like Target(link is external) losing credit card information for 40 million customers, or the recent hack of Anthem insurance that exposed the health data of 80 million customers(link is external).

A group of crosswalk art artists, one of which is a Canadian native named Peter Gibson aka Roadsworth(link is external), is generating a lively conversation about how this form of art can help in pedestrian and traffic safety efforts in major cities.  As the creative delights intrigue the eye so the foot slows on the gas pedal as the car appproaches a busy intersection.  This has become a global movement wth cross walk art in places as far away as Kyrgyzstan.  In his words the 40-year-old artist describes his intentions behind this asphalt phenomenon.

I remeber Socorro, New Mexico was the worst speed trap that would catch unsuspecting drivers who tried to abide by the 75-mile-per-hour.  On a downhill slope at a close to 90 degree angle this was nearly impossible as the car woud easily hit 90.  Right at the bottom just hidden from view there the police awaited...But who knew there were laws to prevent the abuse of this practice.
