It was about 12:50am when an SUV driven by Martinez failed to slow down for a scooter, driven by Mallia, and rear-ended it. The collision sent the scooter flying 150 feet forward, where it stopped and threw Mallia an additional 50 feet. Martinez left the scene, and though a passerby quickly called 911 when he saw the damage, Mallia was dead at the scene. Police were attempting to locate the suspect's vehicle in a nearby apartment complex parking lot and were told that a Lincoln Navigator with damage to the front came and left at about 1:00am.

At approximately 11:22 p.m. Friday, December 19, Robert Leahry was driving an Infiniti on Old Statesville Road when he rear-ended a moped which became lodged in the front of the car. The driver of the moped, Philip Black, 19, was critically injured and transported to Carolinas Medical Center.

Vinicio Mendoza and one other man left a night club in a Ford Mustang at high speed. Witnesses say they were traveling close to 80 mph at one point, in an urban area. The Mustang rear-ended a Honda Civic near 133th East Avenue. Fortunately no one in the Honda was seriously hurt. Mendoza was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and having no driver's license or insurance. The passenger was not arrested. Police are investigating this accident.

Jakita Brown allegedly rear-ended a pickup truck at the intersection of U.S. 41 (3rd Street) and Hulman Street. No one in the pickup truck was seriously hurt. She failed a breath test and had three children in her vehicle at the time. She was taken to Vigo County Jail where she faces a variety of preliminary charges including three counts of neglect of a dependant and driving without a valid driver's license. The accident is still under investigation.

Christopher Dean Woolwine allegedly rear-ended a vehicle, then fled the scene. While fleeing, he lost control of his van and drove off the roadway, striking a tree. His four year old son was in a booster seat in the car and died from injuries sustained in the wreck. Authorities say alcohol was a factor in the crash, and the Woolwine was driving with a suspended license. The crash remains under investigation.
