A Polk County sheriff's sergeant was killed Friday afternoon after a crash on Oregon 22 in Salem.
According to Salem police, at about 4:11 p.m. a vehicle traveling eastbound on Oregon 22 crashed near the Rosemont Northwest on-ramp.
The vehicle was in the right lane when another vehicle passed it, police said. The driver then moved into the left lane, lost control of the vehicle and struck a large cement barrier along the east side of the highway.

A 90-year old man involved in a Tuesday afternoon accident that killed his 91-year-old wife, died Wednesday of his injuries, police said.
Sylvester Cooper Jr., from Amity, was driving west on Oregon 22 when he signaled, slowed and then began to pull across the eastbound lane when his car was hit by a van.
Cooper's wfe, Elizabeth Carolyn Cooper, died at the scene, Lt. Gregg Hastings a spokesman for the Oregon State Police said. Sylvester was taken to Salem Hospital where he died the next day.
Oregon State Police and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office are investigating an accident in which a car went off Oregon 22 west of Detroit and plunged into Sardine Creek.
According to OSP, police were alerted to the crash at 1:28 p.m. Thursday. When they arrived, they found the vehicle, which had extensive front-end damage, in the middle of the stream.
Two people who had been in the car, a 2001 Toyota Avalon, were on the bank of the stream when first responders arrived. Both reportedly had suffered minor injuries and were taken to Santiam Hospital.
