Polk County sheriff’s sergeant killed in Salem crash
A Polk County sheriff's sergeant was killed Friday afternoon after a crash on Oregon 22 in Salem.
According to Salem police, at about 4:11 p.m. a vehicle traveling eastbound on Oregon 22 crashed near the Rosemont Northwest on-ramp.
The vehicle was in the right lane when another vehicle passed it, police said. The driver then moved into the left lane, lost control of the vehicle and struck a large cement barrier along the east side of the highway.
Salem police identified the driver as Randy W. Whittaker, 48, of Dallas. Whittaker worked with the Polk County Sheriff's Office[2] for 15 years.
Salem police are looking for a vehicle of interest in connection with the crash. The vehicle is described as a white Dodge or Chevy pickup truck with a standard or possibly extended cab. The pickup has an industrial style black flat bed. The vehicle is raised with large, oversized tired and appears to be a work truck, police said. Inside the truck were two men, police said.
