At about midnight Sunday at 7th Avenue and Elwood Street in South Phoenix, two vehicles collided head-on. Civilians pulled a woman in her 43-year-old woman from one car before it was engulfed in flames, saving her. The driver of the other vehicle that did not catch fire, Emilio Cruz Castro, 41, was killed. Two passengers in that car, a 41-year-old woman and 9-year-old boy, were trapped in their vehichle and had to be extracted by the fire department. They were taken to a hospital in serious condition.
