Colorado State Patrol says a Calhan man was killed in a crash Tuesday night at around 6:00 p.m. on Highway 94 about 13 miles east of Colorado Springs. A 1996 Toyota Corolla driven by Philip Cooley was eastbound on Highway 94 when it slowed to make a left turn onto northbound Peyton Highway. A 2001 Dodge 2500 driven by Jesse Matamales of Yoder was traveling behind the Toyota failed to slow down and crashed into the back of the Toyota. The two vehicles remained attached to each other and skid for about 153 feet. Cooley was pronounced dead at the scene.
David McGivney and Paul Rodrigues were riding ATVs on Bailey Street when Rodrigues was rear-ended by Mcgivney, causing both men to sustain serious injuries. Neither was wearing proper head gear. Rodrigues sustained severe head trauma and later died at a hospital. Mcgivney was charged with reckless driving, reckless endangerment, driving without a helmet, and for not having any insurance.
