On Saturday in Watauga County, the North Carolina Highway Patrol says a pickup truck driven by Michael Pinkham was traveling at a high rate of speed when it crossed the center line on U.S. 421 near the Tennessee state line at 8:30 p.m., violently striking a Honda Civic head-on. Inside the Honda was a family from Mountaun City, Tennessee: Nicholas Blackwell, 24, his wife Molly, 23, and their infant Harper, 11 months old. All three died at the scene. Pinkham, of Ridgeway, South Carolina, died an hour later at Watauga Medical Center in Boone.
Whitfield was driving a 2006 Lexus ES330 east in the westbound lanes of I-40W/Bus85S when he collided with a 2004 Freightliner semi-trailer truck, which was headed westbound and driven by Harold Mitchell Doster Jr., 45, of Charlotte. Whitefield was killed in the crash, which remains under investigation.
Brandon Boles, of Stokes County, and Pablo Cruz, of Dudley, were killed in a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 40 before the Farmington Road exit Sunday morning. A Ford pickup truck was traveling east in westbound lanes when it hit a Chevrolet pickup head-on. The vehicle driven by Cruz was traveling east in the westbound lane. The Chevrolet caught fire after the crash.
