A man who crashed his car into a house Thursday evening is accused of driving the wrong way down another street minutes earlier — all while being “extremely impaired.” Burlington police were searching for the 1994 Honda Accord driven by Mario O’Keith Strayhorn, 22, of Roslyn Drive, after it struck another car while going the wrong way down Fisher Street. Strayhorn is accused of fleeing the scene on Fisher Street before losing control of his car on Front Street, running off the road, jumping a ditch and going through the yards of two houses, eventually crashing into the corner of a house at the intersection of Front Street and Ridgecrest Avenue. Police estimated Strayhorn was traveling around 65 miles per hour, and cited speed and alcohol as contributing factors to the wreck. “We could tell he was extremely impaired,” said a police spokesman of officers’ observation of Strayhorn after the crash. Strayhorn was transported to Alamance Regional Medical Center, where he was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. An officer had the victim of the hit-and-run positively identify Strayhorn’s car at the scene of the Front Street accident, police said. Strayhorn was charged with driving while impaired, speeding, failing to maintain proper lane control, displaying a revoked license plate, hit-and-run, driving the wrong way on a one-way street and careless and reckless driving. Epps said the estimated damage to the house is $7,500, which includes the brick work, garage door and homeowner’s car bumper damaged by Strayhorn’s vehicle. “Fortunately, nobody got hit,” police said of the second crash. “There were a lot of people out then.” Since Strayhorn was cited at the hospital, no bond was set.
