Pauline Sue Champion, 46, was driving west on Burnside Road in Henderson when she lost control of her vehicle, crossed the center line and hit pedestrians Cornell Hester and Charles Neale. Hester was killed, and Neale sustained a traumatic brain injury. Champion was released on a $75,000 bond.

Jahlen Williams, the 8-year-old boy who was struck by a car Monday morning while crossing Rock Quarry Road, died of his injuries, WakeMed Hospital officials said Wednesday.

The boy had been in critical condition since EMS medics rushed him to the hospital immediately after he was hit by a car that police estimated was traveling 34 mph and was thrown more than 40 feet.

A report from police accident investigators said Jahlen “darted into traffic” while crossing the four-lane road with his family.

Fayetteville police say a Fort Bragg soldier is dead after he was struck by a vehicle as he tried to cross a local street.

A statement from the Army post said 23-year-old Spec. Fernando Rodriguez of Brownsville, Texas, was attempting to cross Morganton Road when he was hit.

So far, no charges have been filed in Sunday's accident.

Rodriguez was a military police officer assigned to the 65th Military Police Company, 503rd Military Police Battalion, 16th Military Police Brigade. He arrived at Fort Bragg in January 2010.

A 53-year-old woman was killed when a pickup truck struck her on Tuesday night.

Denise Michelle Holliday, 53, was crossing South Saunders Street near its intersection with Carolina Pines Avenue just after 9 p.m., according to the Raleigh Police Department.

At the time of the collision, Holliday was not within a crosswalk and oncoming traffic had a green light, according to a preliminary police investigation. The vehicle was traveling at about 39 mph when it hit her, according to police.

Police charged a 20-year-old man with driving while impaired in the wake of an accident Saturday night that killed a pedestrian.

Officers also charged Darrius Cortez Gilbert of 600 Pyracantha Drive in Holly Springs with driving after consuming alcohol while under 21 years old.

Jesse Lemar Lawrence, 33, of Holly Springs was struck at N.C. Highway 55 and New Hill Road about 11 p.m. Saturday, police said.

He died early Sunday of his injuries after doctors tried to save him at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh.

A 16 year old from Clinton was killed early Saturday morning on Highway 70 east of Goldsboro.

Troopers say James Edward Johnson was walking near Lake Wackena Road when he was struck by a vehicle driven by Larry Dale Evans, of Dunn. It happened in the westbound lane of Highway 70.

Johnson received fatal injuries.

No citations were issued.

Authorities say a man is dead and his wife seriously injured after a pedestrian accident in Fayetteville Thursday evening.

It happened around 7:30 p.m. on Cedar Creek Road near Bureau Drive.

Police say the man and woman were struck by an SUV when they were trying to cross the four-lane highway.

Officers believe the couple was staying at one of the hotels along Cedar Creek Road, and had crossed the road earlier. An employee at a convenience store says the man and woman left the store headed back across to a motel.

A 21-year-old Kure Beach man was charged early Friday in connection with a hit-and-run wreck on Interstate 40 West near U.S. Highway 70 that killed two people.

Marshall Hudson Doran is charged with two counts each of second-degree murder and hit-and-run causing serious injury or death. He is also charged with resisting arrest and felony possession of a controlled substance.

According to investigators, a tractor-trailer cab being driven by Cardell Gayfield lost control and ended up perpendicular in westbound travel lanes of I-40 at about 8:30 p.m.

Raleigh police closed northbound Creedmoor Road near the intersection with West Millbrook Road for a time Thursday morning after a car seriously injured a man shortly after 7 a.m.

At the same time, police had to close a section of Sunnybrook Road near Wake Technical Community College Health Sciences Campus because of an accident there.

Police said the man who was struck was in critical condition at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh.

A 16-year-old North Carolina girl died following a hit-and-run collision Thursday night. Justice Yasmeem Smith was hit around 9:40 p.m. in north Raleigh. She later died at a hospital. The suspect vehicle fled the scene and hasn't been found yet, Raleigh police said. Smith was a junior at Wake Forest High School. Counselors will go to the school Wednesday, when classes resume.
