A 21-year-old Kure Beach man was charged early Friday in connection with a hit-and-run wreck on Interstate 40 West near U.S. Highway 70 that killed two people.
Marshall Hudson Doran is charged with two counts each of second-degree murder and hit-and-run causing serious injury or death. He is also charged with resisting arrest and felony possession of a controlled substance.
According to investigators, a tractor-trailer cab being driven by Cardell Gayfield lost control and ended up perpendicular in westbound travel lanes of I-40 at about 8:30 p.m.
Two other vehicles, a green Toyota Corolla and gray Dodge Stratus, tried to avoid the tractor-trailer and ended up sliding down an embankment.
Another tractor-trailer driven by Larry Kepley pulled up behind the vehicles, and Kepley was putting out reflectors to warn other drivers when Doran's Volvo sedan hit him, Gordon said. Kepley, 39, of Winston-Salem, died at the scene.
The Volvo also hit Nathaniel Williams, who was driving the Stratus, Gordon said. Williams, a member of the U.S. Navy from Hope Mills, was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
Raleigh police and state troopers found the Doran's vehicle, a station wagon, at I-40 West near Lake Wheeler Road with its windshield shattered. He was taken into custody after trying to flee the scene on foot, officials said.
Doran was in the Wake County jail early Friday under a $5,000,000 bond.
