As a matter of procedure, Sgt. Jay has been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation.
A serious crash occurred involving an unmarked Bonner County Sheriff's Office SUV and a trike motorcycle on Highway 95 south of Sandpoint. An unmarked SUV being driven by on-duty Bonner County Sheriff Sergeant Phyllis Jay entered Highway 95 from Sagle Road and crashed into an oncoming trike motorcycle. Both riders were thrown from the motorcycle. They have been identified as Rodney Howard, 67, and Catherine Howard, 66, of Priest River, Idaho, who were transported Kootenai Medical Center. Both sustained life-threatening injuries. Sgt. Jay was not injured in the crash.
