2-vehicle crash kills girl near Effingham
An 11-year-old child was killed and seven other people needed medical attention after a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 45 north of Effingham on Sunday afternoon.
Torie M. McMahon, 11, of Toledo was killed in the accident, according to Illinois State Police.
A state police news release said the SUV driven by Harold B. Hartke, 73, of Teutopolis and the van driven by Dennis K. McMahon, 47, of Toledo collided about two miles north of Effingham about 3:10 p.m. Sunday. Torie McMahon was one of three passengers in Dennis McMahon's vehicle, it said.
The release said Hartke was southbound on U.S. 45, lost consciousness and his vehicle began to go off the road. McMahon was northbound and swerved to try to avoid the other vehicle when Hartke regained consciousness, overcorrected and the vehicles collided, it said.
The other passengers in McMahon's vehicle were Tracy A. McMahon, 41, and Dennis K. McMahon, 9, both of Toledo. State police indicated they were airlifted to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, but a Carle representative said Monday that no information on their conditions would be released.
The two drivers and three passengers in Hartke's vehicle were taken to St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham, according to state police. Attempts to contact hospital representatives for information on their conditions were unsuccessful.
State police identified the passengers in Hartke's vehicle as Mary E. Hartke, 69, of Teutopolis and Richard H. Hartke, 48, and Rachel R. Hartke, 13, both of Carterville.
Harold Hartke was cited for improper lane use, according to the state police release.
