Joseph Boever, 55, killed in pedestrian collision involving driver Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg in Hyde County, South Dakota

South Dakota’s attorney general struck and killed a man while driving on Saturday night, a death that was discovered after he initially told police he had hit a deer, the South Dakota Department of Public Safety said Monday.

South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg said in a statement late Monday that he realized he had struck and killed a man walking along a rural stretch of highway only after returning to the scene the next day and discovering the body.

Ravnsborg said Sunday he was “shocked and filled with sorrow.” He released a second statement on Monday night detailing his account of the accident, saying it was necessary to dispel rumors.

While the investigation is largely completed, authorities said, they are still waiting on several reports, including a coroner’s summary.

The calls for his resignation have ramped up in light of new evidence released Tuesday night, in which investigators say that they found Boever's broken glasses in Ravnsborg's car and that the victim's face had come through the attorney general's windshield. 

South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg pleaded not guilty in an initial court hearing Friday for three misdemeanor charges he is facing for striking and killing a man with his car last summer.

Beadle County State’s Attorney Michael Moore, who is one of two prosecutors on the case, told The Associated Press that “there won’t be a trial and there will be a plea entered,” but he declined to discuss further details of the arrangement. The plea will be entered Thursday, when Ravnsborg’s trial was scheduled to begin, he said.
