Officials of a Topeka school district say a teenager who died in a traffic accident had received his diploma just hours earlier.
The Topeka Capital-Journal reports Ronnie Graham was alone in his pickup truck when it struck a tree on a residential street around 3:30 a.m. Monday. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Graham had just finished his senior year at Seaman High School in Topeka. The school held its graduation ceremony on Sunday afternoon at the Kansas Expocentre.
A Topeka motorcyclist who was critically injured Friday in a wreck with a sport utility vehicle in western Shawnee County died Saturday afternoon, authorities said.
Shawnee County sheriff’s Deputy Scott Gilchrist said Jerry Johnston, 42, died from injuries he sustained about 5:15 p.m. Friday at S.W. 29th and Indian Hills Road.
Gilchrist said a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer turned in front of the Harley-Davidson, failing to yield to Johnston, who struck the SUV.
Topeka police on Friday evening identified the motorcyclist who was injured in a crash Thursday as Solomon Omega Smith, 28, of Topeka.
Police and first responders were called about 12:45 p.m. Thursday to the crash, which occurred at S.W. 7th and Lincoln. An initial investigation indicated Smith was northbound on S.W. Lincoln and entered the intersection, where he struck the side of a hospital security vehicle before continuing to slide across the pavement.
Smith, who wasn’t wearing a helmet, was taken to a hospital for treatment.
