According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, an eastbound Honda Civic was traveling at a reduced speed because of road construction about five miles west of Topeka. A second vehicle, a GMC Denali, failed to reduce its speed and rear-ended the Civic.

Both young passengers were taken to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center, though the extent of their injuries is unknown. Though three other people were involved in the crash, none were injured.
