Mark W. Backstrom, 54, was driving a pickup on I-5 on the Lewis River Bridge when he changed lanes to avoid an illegally stopped car, lost control of the vehicle, and struck the rail of the bridge. Next, a semi-truck without a trailer struck Backstrom's vehicle, and three vehicles that were behind it, including an armored truck and two SUV's slowed to avoid the wreck. Finally, a semi-truck carrying two trailers full of chickens driven by Robert L.

At about 1:09am, Woodward was driving an SUV on Carolina Beach Road when she crashed into the back of a sedan that was traveling the same direction. Fox, a passenger in the sedan that was driven by his wife, died as a result of the collision. Woodward now faces numerous charges, including DWI.

It was about 3:35am when a car full of students caused the intial rear-end collision that led to a seven-car pileup on I-94. The 23-year-old driver of that vehicle has been arrested for drunken driving, and while many people sustained minor injuries from the crash, no one was seriously hurt.

Randell Omar Foxe was driving at the intersection of Northern Blvd. and Carolina Beach Road just after 1 a.m. when he was rear-ended by 22-year-old Clarissa Woodward. Foxe died in the crash, and Woodward was charged with DWI, felony death by a motor vehicle and reckless operation.

David Willis of Middleborough was driving a 2014 Honda CRV at a high rate of speed in the northbound lanes of I-495 in Franklin, MA when his vehicle struck the rear of a 2005 Jeep Wrangler while changing lanes. Willis's vehicle then went off the road, crashed into a rocky abutment and rolled over. The Honda driver was brought to Milford Hospital, where he died. The driver of the Jeep, William Leahy, 49 of Bennington, New Hampshire, wasn’t injured. Speed was a factor in the accident.

At approximately 11:22 p.m. Friday, December 19, Robert Leahry was driving an Infiniti on Old Statesville Road when he rear-ended a moped which became lodged in the front of the car. The driver of the moped, Philip Black, 19, was critically injured and transported to Carolinas Medical Center.

A car containing Higgins as the driver and Johnson and three children as passengers was rear-ended by a Jeep driven by Logsdon. The impact sent Higgins' vehicle into the oncoming lane, killed Johnson and injured all other people involved. Logsdon has been listed in fair condition, but the conditions of the other victims is unknown.

At around 10:00am, Alvarez made a turn onto SR 223 and ran into the back of a semi-truck driven by Stephen Moore, 48. Alvarez was injured and taken to the hospital, but has already been treated and released; he will likely be cited with failure to yield the right of way. A car driven by a 22-year-old man from Gladwin rear-ended a horse-drawn buggy containing two adults and seven children. Five people inside the buggy were transported to a local hospital for their injuries. These included both 34-year-old adults, and 3 children ages 10, 5, and 8 months. The horse was also severely injured and had to be euthanized. Foggy weather conditions and alcohol were considered main factors in this accident.
