Two people are dead and three others injured after the truck they were in was hit by a train in Tuscaloosa Tuesday morning, a representative for the Alabama State Troopers said Wednesday. The accident occurred on at the rail crossing at the intersection of Larry Nolan Road and University Boulevard East near Cottondale. It is not clear if the snow showers, icy roads and other winter conditions that plagued drivers in the state Tuesday were a major contributing factor to the collision.

A school bus driver was swaying with poor balance and smelling of alcohol when Winona County authorities responded to a crash. The bus, with five children on board, had gone off the wrong side of Fern Valley Road near Altura and crashed into trees. Karl A. Herber, 54, of Rollingstone, Minn., was charged with three counts of drunken driving and child endangerment after registering a .09 blood-alcohol level when tested more than two hours after the crash Tuesday afternoon, the Winona County Chief Deputy.

A man is in custody in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident in Phoenix. Darren Darnelle Hanson, 21, called police about 35 minutes after Tuesday night's accident and turned himself in, officers said. Hanson is being held on suspicion of leaving the scene of a fatal collision. Investigators said Matthew James Helmick, 35, was crossing in the area of 2300 West Maryland Avenue about 7 p.m. when he was struck by a car, which left the scene. Police said Helmick was transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. The case remains under investigation.

A wrong-way crash on Interstate 81 in Cumberland County left one woman dead on Tuesday night. State police say a tractor-trailer crashed head-on into a vehicle headed north in the southbound lanes in Silver Spring Township. The collision happened after the truck sideswiped another vehicle trying to avoid the oncoming car. The crash happened shortly before 9 p.m. on I-81 near mile marker 57 outside of Mechanicsburg. The driver of the wrong-way vehicle, Aaron King, of Carlisle, was killed

At least four children were airlifted by medical helicopter Tuesday afternoon from the scene of a one-vehicle crash in Menallen Township, according to state police. A van driven by Leah Rudolph 33, overturned on Coon Road at approximately 3:47 p.m., said a state police spokesman. It was later determined that she fell asleep at the wheel. It was not immediately known exactly how many people were injured in the incident, but at least four were flown from the scene by two medical helicopters, Hicks said.

A driver, whose vehicle veered off the road and plunged through brambles into a creek front first, had to be extricated in a tricky emergency operation. The car dove into the creek in the 6700 block of 35th Avenue Northeast, north of Keizer, about 10:30 a.m. Fire crews were called to the scene to rescue the driver, who was trapped in the vehicle. Before they could get him out of the car, they had to clear the tangle of brush from the hillside. Crews used ladders to climb down to the car. Within 10 minutes, emergency personnel got him out.

Three people were taken to local hospitals Tuesday afternoon after two cars collided head-on. It happened around 2:30 p.m. at East Raymond Street and South Meridian Street, which is on the city’s south side. Indianapolis fire officials say a red pickup truck was driving west on East Raymond Street but was driving in the east lanes when it hit a Chevy Suburban. The passenger was initially trapped inside the Suburban. That person, and both drivers were taken to the hospital. Details on their injuries were not immediately released. IMPD was investigating the crash on Tuesday.

A state snow plow was involved in a fatal traffic collision Tuesday near Cripple Creek. The crash involving the snow plow and another vehicle happened on Colorado 67, said a Colorado Department of Transportation spokeswoman. The person who died in the incident is not the snow plow driver, but was in the other vehicle, Ford said. The Colorado State Patrol is on scene investigating. The crash happened at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday about 12 miles south of Divide, state patrol Capt. Charles Cargin told the Gazette.

A tow truck driver was critically injured after a hit-and-run driver slammed into him on the side of the road in Bloomington. The incident occurred shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday when a tow truck driver with Aslan Towing out of Riverside was called to pick up a yellow Chevy Camaro on a bridge over rail road tracks near the 10200 block of Cedar Avenue. The road is very narrow and has no shoulder. As the tow truck driver was putting the Camaro onto the flat bed of his truck, California Highway Patrol officials say someone driving a silver Nissan Altima slammed into him at high speed.

Emergency officials responded to a deadly crash in Surry County Tuesday afternoon. The crash was reported around 1:15 p.m. on Poplar Springs Road near Timberbrook Trail east of State Road. Surry County EMS Director John Shelton said the crash was fatal and involved one car. No other information has been released. As of 2 p.m., Surry County emergency crews were responding to four crashes, three of which reportedly involved personal injury or entrapment. It's unclear if any other crashes are weather-related.
