Phoenix police said a 64-year-old man was struck by and killed by a car in west Phoenix early Thursday evening.

Abelardo Rivera-Contreras was crossing 83rd Avenue north of Indian School Road outside an unmarked crosswalk about 6:15 p.m. when he was struck by a 2006 Ford Fusion driven by a 27-year-old man, who stayed at the scene until police arrived, said Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson.

Rivera-Contreras was taken to a Phoenix hospital, where he died, Thompson said.

Thompson said impairment might have been a factor and that the investigation was continuing.

A man crossing a Phoenix street died after he was struck by a car Thursday morning.

A Phoenix police spokesman said 20-year-old Victor Lee Squire was hit by a yellow Mustang about 8 a.m. as he crossed a street in the area of Rose Lane and 27th Avenue.

The 39-year-old woman driving the 1998 Mustang stopped and cooperated in the investigation, the spokesman said.

Police said Squire was crossing 27th Avenue outside of an unmarked crosswalk, the spokesman said.

Police said impairment was not a factor and the driver was not expected to face charges.
