Man 64, crossing Phoenix street hit, killed by car

Phoenix police said a 64-year-old man was struck by and killed by a car in west Phoenix early Thursday evening. Abelardo Rivera-Contreras was crossing 83rd Avenue north of Indian School Road outside an unmarked crosswalk about 6:15 p.m. when he was struck by a 2006 Ford Fusion driven by a 27-year-old man, who stayed at the scene until police arrived, said Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson. Rivera-Contreras was taken to a Phoenix hospital, where he died, Thompson said.

Thompson said impairment might have been a factor and that the investigation was continuing.
