Storms raced through the stop sign at Empire and Helena and smashed into Smith’s Ford pickup truck. The collision drove Smith’s pickup into a telephone pole, according to court records. The driver of the SUV, a 49-year-old man from Monroe, was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI, according to the Washington State Patrol. The bicyclist was transported to Harborview Medical Center with various injuries, including several broken bones.

The driver of a southbound Chevrolet Blazer — Norberto Bravo-Vasquez, 56 — didn’t stop at the intersection with a two-way stop at Van Buren Road and slammed into an Acura headed west at 11:24 a.m., said Washington State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary.
