A teenager wearing earphones was struck by a train while walking on Long Island Rail Road tracks, but officials say he's expected to survive. Authorities say 16-year-old Eric Albrecht of East Moriches suffered a broken hip and other injuries. The LIRR says he was walking along the tracks in Center Moriches around 1 p.m. Monday as a Montauk train approached. MTA police said the train was traveling about 60 mph, below the maximum allowable 65 mph.

A 15-year-old Long Island girl was killed and her 13-year-old sister suffered critical injuries after their 19-year-old brother’s car hit another vehicle making a U-turn Monday night, police say. The three siblings were heading west on West Merrick Road near Boden Avenue in Valley Stream in a 2000 Toyota sedan at about 9:30 p.m. when it hit a 2009 Toyota driven by a 31-year-old man, according to the Nassau County Police Department. The 19-year-old’s car barreled into several parking meters and a utility pole after the collision, police say, and the 13-year-old was ejected.

The brutal snowstorm hitting New York appears to have caused several accidents just off the Wantagh Parkway on Long Island early Tuesday morning. The separate accidents resulted in a pileup at Old Country Road in Hicksville, the parkway's northernmost exit, according to New York State Police. "There was a multi-vehicle accident this morning," said s spokesperson for New York State Department of Transportation. "The state police are handling the investigation." The road was closed for about a half hour starting around 9 a.m., she said.

Police say one person was killed and another critically injured in a Long Island car crash Friday evening. A man driving south on Pidgeon Hill Road in South Huntington crossed into the northbound lane and struck a minivan, according to officials. Coles Jacquet, 30, a passenger in the car that veered into the wrong lane, died in the crash, and Fermin Estevez, 23, the car's driver, was taken to Stony Brook Hospital and is in critical condition. The driver of the minivan and its four passengers, including three children, were taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.

A car crashed into a store on Long Island Thursday morning after it was struck by another car. There were no serious injuries. The car was stopped at a traffic light in Freeport when it was hit by another car that was swerving to avoid a third vehicle, according to a worker in the store. The force of the impact sent the first car into the store, which sells marble and granite.

Four people were rescued from a tugboat that capsized off Long Island, just moments before the vessel sunk into the water. The 38-foot towing vessel Sea Lion started taking on water south of Atlantic Beach, and the Coast Guard was called to rescue the four boaters on board, a spokeswoman said. Two pilot boats were nearby at the scene and were able to rescue the mariners. The assistant chief of the Atlantic Beach Rescue Squad, said the boat "started going down like a rocket" minutes after he arrived.

One man was killed in a crash on the westbound Long Island Expressway in Queens Thursday morning, one of many accidents that delayed traffic for the morning commute. Multiple vehicles collided in the inbound lanes near exit 31, at the Nassau County Boarder, just after a light band of snow moved through the region around 5 a.m. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. All westbound traffic was funneled into a single HOV lane as authorities investigated, causing miles of delays into Nassau County for hours.

A driver who was allegedly drunk hit and killed a 61-year-old man who was walking across a Long Island road Saturday afternoon, police said. Officials said Brian Dudley, 41, hit the man while he was crossing Elmont Road at the intersection of Cerenzia Boulevard in Elmont at around 3:30 p.m. The man was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital. According to authorities, Dudley was intoxicated and has been charged with second-degree vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated.

A 39-year-old Long Island woman has been arrested for allegedly driving drunk with her two young children in the car, police say. Suffolk County police say Laquita Brooks was arrested after losing control of the car and striking a signpost and then a tree Thursday night in Huntington. Police say her 5-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter were seated in the rear and didn't have proper child restraints. The girl suffered a serious head injury and her brother sustained a minor head injury. The mother wasn't seriously hurt.

A tanker carrying thousands of gallons of fuel overturned and burst into flames on a Long Island highway just before midnight Tuesday, causing two injuries and an inferno that charred several cars, damaged four homes and a Harley-Davidson dealership, Nassau County authorities say. The tanker was traveling east on Sunrise Highway in Bellmore when it rear-ended another vehicle at a stop light, Nassau County police say. After the collision, the tanker turned on its side and spilled fuel as it skidded down Sunrise Highway before coming to a stop at Brevoort Place.
