Bessemer authorities responded to a fatal accident at Exit 1 on I-459 South in Bessemer. The wreck happened when an SUV collided with a stalled 18-wheeler.

Victim in fatal I-459 crash identified

Authorities have identified the victim killed in an afternoon crash Thursday on Interstate 459. According to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office, Carey Howard, 64, of Mountain Brook was killed when his SUV crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer parked on the interstate's shoulder. The accident was reported at 1:19 p.m. Thursday.

The driver of the SUV was killed in the collision with a stalled 18-wheeler on the outside shoulder of Interstate 459 South, Bessemer police said. The victim's name is being withheld pending notification of family.
